Sugar: it really is that bad for you!

Like most American’s I used to be completely addicted to sugar! My Grandma is from Belgium so I was introduced to amazing chocolate at a very young age! Of course my addiction didn’t stop there. I used to live for ice cream! I never understood how people could make a pint of Ben & Jerry’s last for a couple of days! Wasn’t that pint one serving?? Give me some Phish Food and an hour with Bravo and I really thought it couldn’t get any better!

I was so happy eating it why did I feel like crap after? Why did I shake an hour after having a candy bar? Why were my mood swings all over the place? Why were there so many questions yet I was ignoring the answers? I didn’t want to stop and listen to my body screaming at me! I was in complete denial. Sugar, one of the things I made into a food group, was something I was not willing to give up. It couldn’t be that bad for me. Could it? Well deep down we all know the truth!

I’m not going to lie, cutting out sugar sucked at first. I did it because I got to the point where I was sick of being sick! I was sick of being shaky, hangry, tired, wired, and hangry again, and so on and so on. This vicious cycle went on everyday all day! When learning about food to treat my thyroid issue I came across information deep down I knew about but didn’t want to face.

Let’s get to it. Here are some disturbing truths about sugar….

  • Consuming sugar generates a high insulin response and causes an immediate suppression of immune function.

  • According to a study in JAMA Internal Medicine, chugging one can of soda per day can increase your risk of dying from heart disease by almost one-third! WHAT? How many of you are drinking soda while reading this? PUT IT DOWN!!! Don’t run and switch it out for diet either….don’t get me started!!!

  • Scientists are starting to link fructose consumption to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis. Which is liver scarring, inflammation, and fat build up on the liver. Yes, you read that right, sugar can be harmful to the liver! Are you still craving that candy?

  • Did you know there are at least 61 different names for sugar? That’s crazy! To make it easy, no need to know all of the names, just eat whole foods!

  • It may lead to metabolic syndrome, like heart disease, diabetes, and liver disease. If you have a waist measurement larger than that of your hips, that can be a sign you need to monitor your health closely and try to avoid the sugar! You can do it! I promise it’s worth it!

  • It can cause major cravings. This one is mind blowing! Eating sugar causes you to want more of it later! It releases an opiate-like substance that activates the brains reward system. It affects the brain much like cocaine and alcohol, which in turn leads to more sugar cravings! That sucks! So when you reach for one tiny piece of chocolate for a treat it could turn into you eating the entire bar that day!

  • Women should have no more than 6 teaspoons per day and men no more than 9. Really not fair that men get more but I won’t get into that! What’s worse is that the average American consumes 22 teaspoons of sugar every day! 22!!! Good grief!

  • Refined sugar is linked to insomnia, hair loss, dizziness, ADD, ADHD, allergies, breakouts, skin irritation, manic depression, tooth decay, cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, obesity, hypertension, hypoglycemia, type 2 diabetes, colon cancer, and pancreatic cancer. I should have started with this stat! If this doesn't get you to want to eat more vegetables I don’t know what will! This is horrible!

Ok I can’t go on anymore….there are so many reasons not to eat sugar. It’s endless! I hope this is a good wakeup call for you to want to change your diet!

On the plus side there is hope! I can testify giving up sugar takes time but there does come a point where you don’t crave it anymore. I’ve gotten to the point where I feel so great without sugar I don’t know why I didn’t want to listen to my body much earlier! When you are going through the mood swings and jitteriness your body is trying to tell you something! Listen to it!

So what’s the next step to cutting out sugar? There are a ton of options! You could grab some berries. They are high in antioxidants and will help with your sweet tooth! You can reset your metabolism where you learn to eat whole foods to become a fat burner instead of a sugar burner! It will have you reaching for veggies instead of sweets!
